Hmmm, well, let me share MY experience with you and you can make up your own mind.
I bought a 1987 Honda Rebel 450 (not a Savage, but still a used Japanese bike) in August of 1997, for $800 US. It had a little over 12,000 miles on it, a fresh top end, and fit me like it was made for me.
I rode the dogsh*t out of it for 3 months, put 2000 more miles on it, and it died. We got it running again, I put a coupla hundred more miles on it, and it died again.
This time it's kaput. We can't figure out WHAT's wrong with it.
Do I wish I hadn't spent the $800? Well, no. I'm glad I got what fun out of it that I could, especially since there's not likely to be another "perfect fit" bike for me. But if I had known then what I know now, No Way would I have bought that bike!
